    ARTIST INFORMATION: Marc Chagall (1887-1985)
Marc Chagall is recognized as one of the most significant and critically acclaimed artists of the 20th century.
Chagall is a Russian-born French painter, born July 7, 1887, in Vitsyebsk, Russia and was educated in art in Saint Petersburg and, from 1910, in Paris, where he remained until 1914. Director of the Art Academy in Vitsyebsk from 1918 to 1919 and the Moscow Jewish State Theater from 1919 to 1922. In 1923, he moved to France, where he spent the rest of his life, except for a period of residence in the United States from 1941 to 1948.
Chagall’s first retrospective took place in 1924 at the Galerie Barbazanges-Hodebert, Paris. During the 1930s, he traveled to Palestine, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, and Italy. In 1933, the Kunsthalle Basel held a major retrospective of his work. During World War II, Chagall fled to the United States. In 1941 Chagall went into exile from Nazi occupied France to the United States. He had received an invitation by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Museum of Modern Art, New York, gave him a retrospective in 1946 that was an enormous success.
He settled permanently in France in 1948 and exhibited in Paris, Amsterdam, and London. During the 1960s, Chagall continued to travel widely, often in association with large-scale commissions he received including a ceiling for the Paris Opera, installed in 1964, a window for the United Nations building, New York, installed in 1964; murals for the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, in 1967, windows for the cathedral in Metz, France and more. Besides his paintings and glass-windows for Roman-Catholic cathedrals and Jewish synagogues, he created a stunning plethora of prints. Exhibitions of the artists work from 1967 to 1977 was held at the Museum du Louvre, Paris, in 1977, and a major retrospective was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1985. Chagall's unique distinctive use of form , shape and color is derived in part from Russian expressionism and was influenced by French cubism. His work treats subjects with a sense fantasy and wit. Chagall's personal and unique imagery is often infused with exquisite poetic inspiration. He developed his very own highly poetic style.
Working with Mourlot and Sorlier in Paris, Chagall returned to France in1947, beginning a completely new era for his printmaking in cooperation with the publisher Mourlot in Paris. Chagall worked regularly in the printing studio of Mourlot. In this period he created his graphic masterpieces like Daphnis and Chloe. Chagall died March 28, 1985, in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. Chagall’s works are highly after by museums and art collectors worldwide. Chagall is widely considered as one of the undisputed greatest artists of the 20th century.
